UNC Chapel Hill Department of Safety has met the Standard of Excellence and is designated a Best Workplace for Commuters. The Commuter Alternatives Program is a regionally and nationally-recognized program designed to encourage and reward UNC students, faculty, and staff who do NOT drive alone to campus. Alternative transportation supports UNC Sustainability Goals that also include reducing traffic congestion and the number of vehicles parked on campus. UNC is a leader contributing $5.9 million per year to insure fare free public municipal transit and a free annual pass for regional transit. UNC also offers vanpools, carsharing and actively promotes and participates in healthyinitiatives to encourage and increase employee walking and bicycling.
