Mode Splits by Metropolitan Statistical Area

Each year, the Census Bureau releases mode split information obtained through the American Community Survey.  We have reformatted the comparative economic characteristics data for 2014-2018 five year period versus 2009-2013 period to show the mode splits for over 300 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). This document contains a series of tables, including estimates of total workers, and columns showing statistical significance by comparing 2014-2018 five year period to previous five year period. Metropolitan statistical areas (MSA) are listed alphabetically and pages are grouped by commute mode share. An asterisk (*) indicates that the estimate is significantly different (at a 90% confidence level) than the estimate from 2009-2013. Please note that the Census Bureau does not re-tabulate past-year estimates based on the current year’s) MSA geographies; the comparison is with the existing geography of each data year.

This data may help you:

  • Track trends in mode split changes over time for your MSA
  • Provide benchmarking data so you “know where you stand” relative to your peers
  • Set short and long term mode split goals for your program
  • Provide data for marketing and community relations efforts
