Compressed Work Week

Compressed work week is an arrangement where an employee works the standard number of hours in a one or two week period, but compresses those hours into fewer work days (thereby working longer hours on the days the employee is at work). Compressed workweek schedules successfully eliminate work trips and lessen trips taken during peak traffic congestion hours.  Examples oof compressed workweek are:

  • 4/10 schedule; four 10-hour days per week
  • 9/80 schedule; 80 hours in a two-week period worked over nine days instead of ten
  • 3/12; 3 days in a one week period

Employers establishing a successful compressed work week meet a Primary Benefit for qualification as a Best Workplace for Commuters.
