Live from the Bay Area News Station, this is Kron 4 News at 9.
While although commuting in the Bay Area seems impossible sometimes,
a growing number of employers are actually making it easier for their
workers and cutting back on pollution at the same time. Kron 4's Anna
Duckworth has the story.
The Bay Area is one of the most congested regions in the nation. Which
is why the EPA came out from Washington DC.
Robin Snyder from the EPA
We’re here to recognize the employers that are offering excellent
commuter benefits to their employees.
Anna Duckworth, Reporter
The Bay Area was chosen for the EPA’s first ever, best workplaces
for commuters list.
Robin Snyder from the EPA
You have an excellent transportation system, you have a network of various
rail transportation as well as bus services, you’ve got van pool
services, you have excellent car pool support through rides as well as
other organizations. This is an area rich in transportation options.
Anna Duckworth, Reporter
Out of 6,500 companies contacted by the EPA, 83 were chosen for providing
a wide range of commuter benefits and thus helping reduce traffic and
air pollution. One of those companies, is San Francisco’s California
Academy of Sciences which offers employees 3 days of vacation per year
if they don’t drive to work.
Co Representative (Eliot Dobris)
If you don’t want the vacation time, you can earn $1.40 a day extra
by using alternative forms of transportation.
Anna Duckworth, Reporter
San Quentin State Prison also made the list as did Yahoo of Sunnyvale
for offering incentives to vanpool or carpool, work at home or other perks
for not driving alone.
Nicki Dugan from Yahoo
They do carpool. They have options that does not necessitate them having
to leave campus in order to do things like buy cold medicines, buy birthday
cards, buy flowers. If you ride your bike to work, we have bike lockers,
as well as showers in our gym facilities.
Anna Duckworth, Reporter
A wide variety of other companies made the list, Amy's Kitchen an organic
frozen food company in Santa Rosa, Apple Computer, Chevron Texaco and
San Francisco’s St. Francis Memorial Hospital.
The EPA says they plan to make the list annually and expand it to other
metropolitan areas of the country.
