Southeast Michigan Council of Governments
One of the Best Workplaces for CommutersSM since July, 2001, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) is a leader in providing progressive transit benefits. As a regional planner, SEMCOG is an excellent example of social and environmental responsibility for employers and municipal governments in its region. Program at a GlanceSEMCOG provides a host of commuter benefits to its employees. With access to a variety of commuting options, every employee has a reasonable alternative to driving to work alone. SEMCOG encourages savvy commuting by offering discounted monthly transit passes, discounted vanpool passes, and access to carpool matching and Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) programs. Begun in 1993, SEMCOG's GRH program has proven to be an effective and inexpensive service. In fact, the organization has spent more money on informational materials than on providing rides home!
SEMCOG provides its employees with the information they need to make intelligent commuting decisions. It is the lead partner of a local Ozone-Awareness system and passes on information to its employees about pollution, traffic, and alternative commuting opportunities. Finally, SEMCOG provides benefits that make it easy for employees to leave their cars at home. There are various amenities within walking distance of the SEMCOG worksite, including dry cleaners, a post office, restaurants, even a Secretary of State office! Several fleet vehicles are also available for employees’ use, allowing employees to attend business meetings during the day without having their own cars at work. Employees can also work a flexible schedule, timing their commutes and their working hours to establish a positive work-life balance. SEMCOG is helping lead the way toward smarter commuting in Southeast
Michigan. “SEMCOG encourages area employers to offer commuter benefits
to their employees,” explains Paul Tait, SEMCOG's Executive Director.
“Our recognition as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters proves
that we’re ‘walking the talk.’ We offer the benefits
that we would like to see all of the employers in our area provide.”
