Hewlett-Packard
With two sites in Atlanta offering excellent commuter benefits, Hewlett Packard holds the position as one of Atlanta’s true corporate leaders in addressing the twin issues of air quality and traffic congestion. HP is also recognized nationally for its commitment to alternative transportation and the provision of employee commute options in many of the markets where it has offices. Program at a GlanceHP began its local program in 1995 in a partnership with the Commute
Connections program of the Atlanta Regional Commission. Through this initial
partnership, and later through a continuing relationship with the Perimeter
Transportation Coalition, the Perimeter offices of HP developed a comprehensive
range of commute options for its employees. The core of HP’s programs is participation subsidies, which are
The initial objectives of HP’s programs were tied to employee retention and future recruitment. The maintenance of the program at the Perimeter location is very much about providing a high quality of worklife for existing employees, investing in the local business community, and sustaining the quality of the commuter benefits program. A significant boost to HP’s programs in recent years has been the company’s progressive vision of opening its vanpools to the employees of other nearby companies. Currently, employees from Hewitt Associates, Kodak, Zurich Insurance, Cox Communications, and AutoTrader.com ride HP vans Program Recognition
HP believes that good commute options help retain and recruit better employees, protect the investment in HP facilities, and give HP leadership the chance to effect a better business environment. During a time of tremendous change within HP, the provision, stability and presence of various TDM options provided a predictable touchtone for long-time HP employees, and a new, generous benefit for the newer employees. During a particularly difficult broader economic recession, these options also provided HP employees a way to reduce the emotional stress and economic cost of commuting to work – hopefully dampening the impact of the broader economic conditions in the country. It is obvious to HP that air quality and traffic congestion are not simply a Perimeter or Alpharetta concern, but a regional concern that must continuously be addressed if it’s to improve.
