Transit Benefits

CH2M Hill -- Natomas, California

In October 2003, EPA recognized CH2M Hill's Natomas office as one of the Greater Sacramento Regions Best Workplaces for CommutersSM. The Sacramento Business Journal Exit Web site highlighted CH2M Hill's extensive commuter benefits program, which includes free bus passes for employees. Nearly 20 percent of the roughly 250 employees in the Natomas office have free bus passes, and the company offers carpool spaces, bike lockers, locker rooms with showers, and $300 bike subsidies. The article highlighted the experiences of CH2M Hill vice president Jim Hartley, and how the commuter benefits program has positively impacted his daily routine and the company's image.

Georgia Power/Southern Company—Atlanta, Georgia

Between 1997 and 1999, Georgia Power/Southern Company instituted a series of commuter choice initiatives designed to allow their employees to assist in reducing Atlanta's worsening air pollution. One benefit gives employees $65 per month in subsidies for transit, shuttles, or vanpools. The number of employee using new commute modes increased from 300 employees in 1997 to 1,500 employees in 2000, or from 10 percent to 50 percent of all employees. Ridership on the MARTA shuttle was at 11,000 boardings per month in June 2000, up from 6,000 per month in 1997.
