City of Henderson, Nevada
Located in the Las Vegas valley, the City of Henderson, Nevada has grown to over 241,000 residents in just over 50 years. Since the 1990s, Henderson, Nevada has remained one of the nation’s fastest growing cities. Both city leaders and residents recognize that with unprecedented growth come significant challenges in maintaining an efficient transportation network. In a recent survey, 89 percent of residents indicated that reducing traffic congestion was either “very important” or “extremely important.” City officials recognized that it must be first in the community to do its part by supporting city employees in choosing commute alternatives. Program at a GlanceThe City of Henderson implemented its commuter benefits program almost six years ago. The city recognized the value of being able to offer commuter assistance as a tangible benefit that could address recruitment and retention needs for the city’s 1500+ employees. The first step in implementing a program was partnering with the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) to provide commuter benefits through their Club Ride Commuter Services Program. The Club Ride Program provides a variety of employee benefits to its participating employers, as well as staff support to assist in program implementation at individual worksites.
Taking the lead in southern Nevada to encourage the use of alternative commute choices, the City of Henderson offers its employees subsidized transit passes, preferred carpool parking, a compressed work week, emergency ride home services, commuting awards programs, rideshare matching opportunities, and more. The city works closely with the RTC to promote the Club Ride Commuter Services Program to employers throughout Henderson. The city and RTC have also partnered to increase transit ridership and increase the number of bus routes serving the community. In 2002 and 2003, the RTC recognized the City of Henderson as “Employer of the Year” at its annual Horizon Awards for the city’s participation in the Club Ride Commuter Services Program. It was the city’s innovative thinking and commitment to providing quality commuter benefits to its employees that earned them this honor. The city’s commitment is also evident through its employee support of the program. The city’s Transportation Coordinators are encouraged to become involved and take a leadership role in promoting commuter benefits within the community. These efforts have earned the Transportation Coordinators a number of honors, including Transportation Coordinator of the year. Transportation Coordinators Tiffany Reardon and Leslie Montisano enjoy working with the Club Ride Program and are always finding new and innovative ways to increase program participation. “It’s a great way to help our employees while also helping to improve our air quality and reduce traffic congestion. It’s a win-win situation for everyone” said Montisano. The city is committed to its mission, which is “To provide services and amenities that enhance the quality of life for those who live, learn, work, & play in the City of Henderson.” Through its commuter benefits program, the City of Henderson demonstrates a concern for its citizens, its employees, their quality of life, and the environment. Bristol Ellington, Henderson’s Community Development Director, appreciates his employees and the overall city’s efforts. “We've received tremendous support for the commuter benefits program from our City Council and from our employees,” said Ellington. “This level of support represents a citywide commitment to preserving the quality of life in our community." Program Recognition
Recognition as one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters (BWC) adds value to the City of Henderson’s traffic-reduction programs. A nationally-recognized mark of excellence, membership on the Best Workplaces for Commuters list signifies the city’s commitment to its residents and businesses.
