List Release Guide

Step 5: Invite Employers to Apply

Another key step is to put together a targeted employer list to focus recruitment efforts. (You may want to start with e-mail/mailing lists from coalition partners and task force members.)

How you handle the division of responsibilities in approaching prospects will depend upon the makeup of your coalition and task force.

Key criteria to use in screening employers include:

Number of employees More Information

Whether the employer has an existing relationship with a coalition partner (or task force member) More Information

Quality of current commuter benefits (if known)More Information

Whether the employer has received previous awards for corporate responsibility, environmental protection, or worker-friendlinessMore Information

Participation in other voluntary programsMore Information

Whether any other work sites of this employer (or its competitors) have already qualified as Best Workplaces for CommutersSM More Information

Try to identify the right contact at the employer organization, such as the human resource manager, employee transportation coordinator, environmental/health official, facilities manager, or public relations official. Once your invitation list is ready, send your e-mails/mailings to the employer prospects (along with your promotional flyer).

Other Promotional Strategies

To reinforce these direct recruitment efforts, work with your coalition partners and task force on a number of other complementary strategies:

Publish newsletter articles

Post Web site announcements

Speak at local meetings and conferences (perhaps sponsored by coalition partners—HR organizations, chambers of commerce)

Issue public service announcements

Install bus signs (if possible)

Write op-eds for your local newspaper

Local Challenges

Another effective strategy is to issue a "challenge" targeting a specific industry sector such as federal agencies, local governments, hospitals, or universities. Review these materials from past challenges:

Best Workplaces for Commuters Districts

Another strategy is to identify areas—business parks, downtown districts, unique property management arrangements—where outstanding commuter benefits are actually provided to the area's employers. To recognize these areas for their leadership, CUTR designates them a "Best Workplaces for Commuters District." Review the link below to learn more.
