List Release Guide

Step 2: Build a Best Workplaces for CommutersSM Coalition

A strong, credible, and business-oriented coalition will help you capture the attention of both employers and the media. To establish your coalition:

Identify your area's key stakeholders—the metropolitan planning organization, primary business group, rideshare organization, human resource association, as well as other commuter or environmental organizations.

Determine the right size for your coalition—in past list releases, six to ten organizations have formed the coalition. The size will depend on your local community and the needs you identify.

Hold a meeting with these key groups or contact them individually to introduce the campaign. Identify common goals and objectives and how you can best work together.

Highlight the positive business and media response achieved in other list releases around the country.

Explain the ways in which each stakeholder can participate, including promoting the list release to their members and constituents and recruiting new employers. This is important because partners will ask: “What do you want me to do?”

Consider which media strategy is best for your list release and identify how coalition members can contribute to it.

Often, it's not possible to include all local transportation demand management organizations on your coalition; however, they play a key role in the success of your list release. We recommend that you create a larger “task force” of transportation management organizations and other stakeholders not on your coalition. These organizations can help promote the list release with their members and customers using sample materials and messages.

Use these resources to help you build your coalition and determine each group's role:
